This new English translation of St. Thomas Aquinas’s *Treatise on Law* (Summa Theologiae, I-II, Questions 90–108) is the only complete stand-alone version, covering both the general concept of law and the five types he identifies: eternal, natural, human, Old, and New Law. Previous editions typically stop at human law, omitting a significant portion of the work.
Aquinas’s view on law is deeply connected to his moral theory, which begins with the idea of human flourishing and our ultimate union with God. He explores how human actions and habits (virtues and vices) shape this journey, leading to his discussion of law and grace as external principles guiding human behavior. Law, rather than replacing virtue, complements it by promoting both individual and social good through divine precepts.
Having the full *Treatise* provides deeper insights, such as the relationship between Old and New Law and the broader moral framework of Aquinas’s theology.
